BRONX, N.Y. – Four runs in the first inning from Fordham set the tone Friday afternoon in the Atlantic 10 opener as the Rams took an 8-2 victory at Houilhan Park over the St. Bonaventure baseball team.
Fordham (13-9, 1-0 A-10) needed just one hit to force across four runs in it the home half of the first – a leadoff triple got things going, but than an error, two walks and a passed ball helped the hosts take an early lead.
Another run came home thanks to a wild pitch in the second as the lead grew to 5-0.
The Bonnies (2-10, 0-1) cracked into the scoring column with a pair of runs in the sixth. Tyler Kelder led off with a single and Brandon Henshaw followed with a home run to right, his first of the season.
That would be the extent of the offense, however. A golden opportunity with runners at second and third with no outs in the third following a walk to Ben MacDonald and a single from Branden Myers went by the boards as an early chance to chip away went for naught.
Myers, a freshman from Hermitage, Pa., had his second two-hit game of the season and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two of the Bonnies' five hits on the afternoon.
Fordham lefty Matt Mikulski (2-3) was strong on the hill, striking out 10 over six innings.
The two teams get back together Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
