Online Coverage – Live Stats

The St. Bonaventure baseball team will host its home opener Tuesday afternoon when the Bucknell Bison visit Fred Handler Park.

HOME AT LAST: After 10 games away from home to begin the season – seven in Florida and a three-game series at Miami (OH) last weekend – the Bonnies finally play on home turf for one non-conference contest vs. Bucknell Tuesday. The Bonnies are set to host 16 games at home this year.

HOT STARTS: Tyler Kelder smacked a career-high four hits Saturday at Miami (OH), continuing his great start to the season at the plate. The freshman, who is playing in the outfield for the first time this season after primarily spending time at first base and DH last year, is hitting .375 with seven doubles and two home runs through 10 games. Senior Alex Schutz has matched him, also hitting .375 with six doubles, two triples and a homer. Schutz also leads the team with a .432 on-base percentage.

FAST FULLER: Senior outfielder Sam Fuller may be the fastest Bonnie – and he's used that speed to be 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts this year with four of the team's six stolen bases. He enters Tuesday with 22 stolen bases for his career and has only been caught stealing five times.

GERMANOWSKKKKKKKKKKKKKI: Head coach Larry Sudbrook has described redshirt freshman Tyler Germanowski as having electric stuff, and the newcomer to the Bona pitching staff showed some of that potential Friday when he struck out 13 batters at Miami (OH) in just five innings. That strikeout total is the most by a Bonnies pitcher since Aaron Phillips struck out 13 vs. La Salle April 28, 2017 and the last time a Bonnies pitcher had more was May 20, 2016 when Connor Grey fanned 15 batters at Saint Joseph's. Germanowski is in good company – both Phillips and Grey were drafted and are currently playing in the minor leagues, for San Francisco and Arizona respectively.

MURPH'S WORK: Junior right-hander Murphy O'Brien was solid in Florida, posting a 1.86 ERA over four appearances in relief with 9.2 innings out of the Bona bullpen. March 9 vs. Central Connecticut, he threw five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. The performance matched his career-long outing, five innings of shutout work March 24, 2017 at Saint Louis.

ABOUT BUCKNELL

  • Bucknell enters Tuesday's contest with a 4-14 overall record and 0-4 in Patriot League play early in the season. The Bison most recently were swept in a four-game series against Navy to open conference play. Despite its record, Bucknell has played quality opponents. The Bison opened the 2019 season with three games against No. 21 North Carolina State. Bucknell's four wins have come by way of a three-game sweep of Niagara and a win against Toledo.
  • The Bison were picked to finish third out of six teams in the Patriot League preseason poll, receiving two first-place votes and just two points behind second-place, Navy. Starting pitcher Jeff Gottesman, catcher Evan Klugerman, first baseman Tyler Wincig and outfielder John Paul Bell were all named to the preseason All-Patriot League team.
  • Caleb Broughton leads the Bison with a .311 batting average, starting in 15 games this season. Bell leads all hitters with 18 hits and 14 RBIs in 42 at-bats while Wincig is second on the team with a .273 batting average and carries an impressive .911 OPS.
