PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Outstanding pitching from starter Braydon Nelson and timely hitting throughout the lineup led to the first victory of the season for the St. Bonaventure baseball team, 6-2, over Mount St. Mary's Monday morning at the Snowbird Classic.
The win evens Bona's record at 1-1 while Mount St. Mary's now stands at 3-4.
Sophomore Tyler Kelder had another big day at the plate and started the scoring with a run-scoring double in the first before Jeff Palczewski cracked a double of his own to plate Kelder for the second run of the inning.
Mount St. Mary's got a run back on a passed ball in the bottom of the first, but the Mount would struggle for offense the rest of the day against Nelson.
Alex Schutz belted his first career home run in the third and from there Nelson was on cruise control. He finished his seven innings of work with 10 strikeouts, allowing just one earned run on three hits while walking two.
The Bonnies picked up some extra run support for Nelson in the fifth when Kelder brought in Schutz with another double. Two more runs crossed the plate later in the inning when a single off the bat of Kevin Higgins allowed both Kelder and Nolan Hayward to score.
Kelder and Brandon Henshaw each registered a pair of doubles while Schutz had a triple to go along with his homer out of the leadoff spot. Higgins went 2-for-3 with a walk.
St. Bonaventure returns to action Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. vs. Western Michigan.
