Bonnies Baseball To Host George Washington in Three-Game Series

Bonnies Baseball To Host George Washington in Three-Game Series

Friday – Saturday, April 27-28
Fred Handler Park

The St. Bonaventure baseball team returns to Atlantic 10 competition this weekend when George Washington visits Fred Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field. The Bonnies will look to cool off a Colonials team that has risen to the top portion of the A-10 standings after an 8-4 start to conference play.

Due to rain in the forecast this weekend, the Bonnies and Colonials are set to play a Friday doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. The series finale on Saturday is still set for a noon start.

St. Bonaventure lost the rubber game of a three-game set at Dayton last Sunday, allowing the Flyers to take a series victory. The Bonnies grabbed a 2-0 win on Saturday to set up Sunday's rubber match, but the Flyers used a seven-run fifth inning to break open the contest and never looked back.

Friday – 12:30 p.m. (Live Stats / Radio: 107.1 FM & 1450 AM) – RHP Brandon Schlimm (0-5, 5.24) vs. RHP Jaret Edwards (2-0, 3.27)

Friday – Game 2 (approx. 30 minutes following completion of game one) (Live Stats / Radio: 107.1 FM & 1450 AM) – RHP Casey Vincent (3-1, 2.10) vs. RHP Elliott Raimo (3-3, 2.36)

Saturday – 12:00 p.m. (Live Stats / Radio: 107.1 FM & 1450 AM) – RHP Ben Contento (1-3, 6.62) vs. RHP Nathan Woods (4-3, 2.76)

Bonnies sophomore Casey Vincent has been one of the top pitchers in Atlantic 10 play this month. He continued his outstanding spring with his first career complete game shutout last Saturday at Dayton, scattering four hits and striking out a career high eight batters. He set down 13 consecutive batters at one point during the game. The outing lowered his season ERA to 2.10 and opponents are batting .184 against him over his six appearances. In three A-10 outings, he is 2-0 with an 0.50 ERA and opponents have hit just .133 off him in 18 innings. Overall, Vincent's 2.10 season ERA is third-best in the Atlantic 10 only behind Ben Greenberg of Fordham (1.74) and Connor Gillispie of VCU (1.90).

Senior Brandon Schlimm is slated to return to action this weekend as well after being scratched last weekend. In his last outing, the right-hander had perhaps his best performance of the season as he allowed just two runs in seven innings of work vs. VCU on April 13 while striking out five.

Bona head coach Larry Sudbrook added to his extensive career resume last weekend as Saturday's win gave him 700 victories for his tenure at St. Bonaventure. The winningest member of the Atlantic 10, Sudbrook also stands second in career conference wins with 307 triumphs against A-10 competition.

George Washington was selected sixth in the Atlantic 10 preseason rankings and to this point has surpassed that prognostication as the Colonials enter the weekend fourth in the A-10 standings. Key to that success has been impeccable pitching – all three conference starters have a sub-3.30 season ERA and the team as a whole has a staff ERA of 3.77. At the plate, Isaiah Pasteur stands second in the league with a .366 batting average while standing in a tie for the league lead with nine home runs and also is among the league leaders in stolen bases, tied for fourth with 18.
