Early Deficit Too Much To Overcome For Baseball in Series Opener

Box Score (PDF)

DAYTON, Ohio – Ben MacDonald posted three hits and David Vaccaro added two as eight of the nine starters for the St. Bonaventure baseball team collected at least one hit, but it would not be enough to overcome an early deficit as Dayton took a 7-4 win Friday afternoon at Woerner Field.

St. Bonaventure (7-21, 3-8 Atlantic 10) saw Dayton (9-24, 3-7) seize a 3-0 lead in the second and the Flyers added two in the third and fifth to establish control.

The Bonnies got a run in the third following a double play ball, but could not do any more damage after loading the bases with no outs.

Dayton took a 5-1 advantage after three, but the Bonnies would score twice in the fourth.

Brandon Henshaw and Casey Vincent each singled back-to-back with one out and each would score on run-scoring singles from Tyler Kelder and MacDonald.

A 5-3 margin would be as close as the Bonnies would get, though.

Dayton posted two more runs in the fifth for insurance and the Bonnies scored just once more – an RBI single from MacDonald in the ninth.

Braydon Nelson (1-3) started and worked three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Nate Grant surrendered two unearned runs in 1.2 innings of relief while Brian Pulli tossed 3.1 perfect frames out of the bullpen with two strikeouts.

Flyers starter Tyler Jones (2-3) had a bend but don't break approach on the mound as he allowed 11 hits, but was able to strikeout 10 in 8.2 innings to pick up the win.

The teams will renew acquaintances Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
