PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Freshman Braydon Nelson made his St. Bonaventure baseball debut one to remember as he pitched a complete game shutout to send the Bonnies past Mount St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon, 3-0.
Nelson scattered eight hits and walked just one while striking out seven and never relinquished control. The Mount (1-4) sent a runner past second base just once – that coming with two outs in the third.
The Brecksville, Ohio native got stronger as the game wore on, striking out the side in the seventh, worked around a leadoff single but did not allow a runner past first in the eighth, and allowed just a harmless two-out single in the ninth but never allowed the tying run to the plate.
To make the outing more impressive, Nelson had to throw the majority of the day with the slimmest of leads.
Bona (2-2) got on the board in the second when Jake Miknis walked with one out. Matt Eastman moved Miknis to second with a single, then following a strikeout, Sam Fuller came through with two outs with an RBI base knock for the 1-0 lead.
That score remained until the ninth when the Bonnies picked up some insurance.
Alex Schutz smacked a pinch hit, one-out single, then got into scoring position with a stolen base. After Mike Magnanti was hit by a pitch, Ryan MacCarrick smacked a two-out double to score both Magnanti and Schutz and gave Nelson some breathing room for his final inning of work.
Fuller and Brandon Henshaw each collected two hits for a Bonnies offense that finished with nine on the day.
After a day off Wednesday, the Bonnies and Mount St. Mary's will complete their three-game set Thursday afternoon.
