BUFFALO – Home runs from David Hollins and Ryan MacCarrick were not enough for the St. Bonaventure baseball team Tuesday afternoon as the Bonnies dropped their non-conference finale, 8-4, at Canisius.
The Golden Griffs (32-19) scored three times in the second for the early advantage, but the Bonnies cut the deficit to just one with two in the third.
With two down in the inning, Aaron Phillips got aboard after being hit by a pitch. That gave Hollins an opportunity and he capitalized, drilling the first pitch he saw to center for his fifth home run in the past six games and his eighth round-tripper of the year.
The momentum was short-lived, though, as the Griffs answered with two more runs in the home half of the inning.
Bona (25-18) got back to within two following a run-scoring single off the bat of Taishi Terashima, but Canisius scored twice more in the fifth to seize complete control.
MacCarrick gave the Bonnies another long ball in the ninth, his fifth homer of the year, but Canisius held on for the victory.
James Wetter, Roman Wild and Nate Grant all tossed scoreless innings of relief while MacCarrick paced the offense with two hits. Cole Peterson stole his 22nd base of the year, moving into seventh in program single season history.
The Bonnies complete their regular season schedule with a key Atlantic 10 series at home later this week, hosting Fordham Thursday through Saturday at Fred Handler Park. With A-10 Tournament seeding on the line, Bona is set for a noon start for all three games.
