ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior Thad Johnson delivered four hits and drove in four runs to power a 14-hit St. Bonaventure attack as the Bonnies baseball team defeated Little Three rival Canisius, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Bona scored twice in the first following an RBI single from Johnson and a sac fly by Aaron Phillips, then added three more runs in the second. Walter singled home the first run of the second inning before Johnson drilled a double to left for two more runs and a 5-0 advantage.
The lead stretched to 6-0 in the fourth following a double down the third base line from Phillips to score Walter, but Canisius would later make things interesting.
The Golden Griffs brought home three runs in the fifth to cut the Bona lead in half before Bonnies reliever Reid Van Woert came out of the bullpen to put out the fire.
After tallying a run of insurance in the sixth, another double off the bat of Johnson in the eighth brought home the eighth run of the day for the hosts.
Van Woert (4-2) earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief after Drew Teller started and did not allow a run in 3.1 frames, striking out five while walking one. Alvin Vega (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Griffs after surrendering four runs in an 1.2 innings.
Phillips also had a multi-hit day for the second consecutive afternoon, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
St. Bonaventure returns to conference play by hosting George Mason for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
