Rhode Island's Late Surge Drops @Bonnies Baseball, 4-1

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island used runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure a 4-1 victory over the St. Bonaventure baseball team in a series-opening pitchers' duel on Friday afternoon.

Reid Van Woert picked up his first A-10 start of the year and kept the Rams off the board for the first six innings.

St. Bonaventure moved ahead 1-0 with an unearned run in the third following a Taishi Terashima ground out to score Eric Willis.

Van Woert made that lead stick until the seventh. In the home half of the seventh, a lead off walk and a triple quickly tied the game and a sac fly put the Rams ahead, 2-1.

Rhode Island added two runs of insurance in the eighth.

That would be more than enough for Rams starter Tyler Wilson (7-1) who tossed a complete game one-hitter. Wilson did not walk a batter and struck out eight. The only hit against him came on a Cole Peterson single through the right side in the second inning.

Van Woert was a tough-luck loser, falling to 3-2 on the year despite only allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four in his seven innings of work.

The Bonnies stand 17-14-1 overall on the year and 4-6 in Atlantic 10 play while Rhode Island moves to 14-19, 6-4.

The two teams square off again on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
