@BonniesBaseball Sweeps Past Buffalo In Pair Of Wednesday Wins

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of rival Buffalo under sunny skies Wednesday at Fred Handler Park, winning a pitcher's duel in the day's first game before opening up the offense in the nightcap.

The Bonnies improve to 11-8-1 on the year after a 2-1 game one victory, closing out the day with a 9-2 triumph to drop Buffalo to 8-13 overall.

Senior Tyler Walter paced the offense with a combined 5-for-6 showing at the plate including four RBIs.

St. Bonaventure plated two first inning runs and made that early offense stick in the first game of the afternoon.

Cole Peterson got the Bonnies going, singling up the middle with one out before stealing second. A walk to Thad Johnson set the stage for Tyler Walter and the Bonnies' leading RBI man came through with a double down the right field line to score Peterson.

One batter later, Aaron Phillips lifted a sac fly to right, plating Johnson from third for the 2-0 edge.

Starter Drew Teller (3-0) made the early offense stick.

Buffalo cut the Bona lead in half during the third thanks to a leadoff double and a fielding error with a groundout to shortstop scoring the run unearned. Teller later ended the inning, though, by starting a double play on a ball hit back to the mound.

Teller finished with 5.2 innings of work, scattering five hits. The only run against him was unearned and the senior did not walk a batter while striking out three.

The Bulls put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh thanks to a single and stolen base from Alex Thrower, but after a seven-pitch at-bat with two outs, T.J. Baker coaxed a fly out to center from leadoff man Bobby Sheppard for the game's final out.

Baker earned the save by recording the final four outs, striking out one.

The nightcap was all Bonaventure after the Bulls pushed a run across in the first.

Buffalo's lead would be short-lived as the Bonnies struck for three runs in the home half of the inning thanks to another run-scoring hit from Walter. A double play ball and wild pitch gave the Bonnies two more scores for a 3-1 lead.

From there, Bona never looked back, tacking on runs in the second and third innings on a wild pitch and well-executed squeeze play with a bunt from David Vaccaro pushing the score to 5-1.

The Bonnies broke the game open with two more in the fourth, plating runs on an RBI double from Peterson as well as an RBI single from Walter.

Walter went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game while Peterson, Taishi Terashima and Ted Dilts all had two hits apiece as the Bonnies finished with 10 as a team.

Reid Van Woert earned the win to move to 1-1 on the year with five innings of one-run ball, striking out two with no walks. Nate Grant registered the final four outs including two punchouts.

St. Bonaventure returns to action this weekend for a three-game set Friday-Sunday at Villanova.
