RICHMOND, Va. - A three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference on Easter Sunday for host VCU to down the St. Bonaventure baseball team, 4-1, and complete a series sweep.
Scoreless through the first five innings, the Rams (16-7, 3-0 Atlantic 10) broke through in the sixth. After back-to-back one-out singles, Matt Davis delivered a two-run double to left center for first scoring of the day. Cody Acker followed with a single through the right side to score Davis for the 3-0 lead.
VCU tacked on a run of insurance in the seventh.
St. Bonaventure (9-8-1, 0-3) got on the board in the eighth on an RBI double by Ted Dilts.
The Bonnies had chances for more, but their frustrating week continued with 10 men left on base.
Bonnies starter Aaron Phillips (2-1) stretched his scoreless inning streak to over 28 innings before being touched up in the sixth. He finished with six innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout and a walk. Drew Teller also threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Tommy LaCongo tallied two of St. Bonaventure's five hits.
Acker went 3-for-4 for VCU.
Bona returns home for non-conference action against Big 4 rival Buffalo with a doubleheader beginning Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fred Handler Park.
