Bonnies Suffer Pair of Losses at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – St. Bonaventure dropped both ends of a Friday afternoon doubleheader at James Madison, falling 7-5 in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, St. Bonaventure (9-4) led 5-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, but James Madison struck for all seven of its runs in that frame. The Dukes (9-10) took advantage of two walks and a hit batter, then later scored two more runs on an infield single by Kyle McPherson and a throwing error by Bonnies first baseman Tyler Walter.

Catcher Tommy LaCongo gave the Bonnies a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run to center field. In the fourth, St. Bonaventure extended its lead to 4-0 behind singles from Thad Johnson and Walter and thanks to a pair of JMU throwing errors.

Walter made it a 5-0 game in the seventh when he tripled to score Johnson from first base.

Bona starter Connor Grey threw six shutout innings before he was touched for three runs in the seventh inning and gave way to the bullpen. Grey struck out five Dukes. T.J. Baker, the second of two Bonnies relievers, suffered the loss as he surrendered two earned runs with two hit batters in 1-1/3 innings of work.

The loss snapped the Bonnies' six-game win streak.

In the nightcap, which was a scheduled seven inning game, St. Bonaventure's offense was quieted by JMU lefthander Colton Harlow. The Bonnies managed just three hits and struck out seven times against Harlow, who went the distance.

Johnson got the Bonnies' RBI when he plated Jared Baldinelli with a double in the third inning.

Bona starter Brandon Schlimm (2-2) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

The teams will complete their three-game series Saturday at noon.
