PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Strong pitching again led the St. Bonaventure University baseball team to victory as the Bonnies used the arms of Aaron Phillips and Reid Van Woert to shutout North Dakota State, 2-0, on Sunday morning.
The Bonnies improve to 8-2 overall while North Dakota State falls to 8-3 with two of its losses coming at the hands of Bona this weekend.
Phillips (2-0) threw seven shutout innings, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out three. The sophomore has not allowed an earned run this spring over 19.2 innings of work through three starts.
Van Woert closed the door, earning his third save of the year by working the final two innings and retiring all six batters he faced including two strikeouts.
St. Bonaventure grabbed an early lead in the second inning. David Vaccaro hit a one-out single to left center and moved to third on a double off the bat of Tyler Walter. Vaccaro would later score on a passed ball for the 1-0 edge.
From there, the game was a pitcher's duel as the 1-0 score held until the eighth. Then, the Bonnies got some insurance.
Cole Peterson led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to right, moving to second on a sac bunt from Thad Johnson. Matt Eastman then delivered a pinch hit single to right to put runners at the corners and Peterson then scored following a sacrifice fly from Vacarro.
That was more than enough for Van Woert, who set the Bison down quietly in the ninth.
Sunday was another outstanding day for the Bonnies pitching staff that has compiled a 1.27 team ERA through the first 10 games of the season.
The Bonnies complete their stay in Florida with a date against Maine Monday morning at 10 a.m.
