PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Senior Connor Grey tossed 7.2 innings of one-run ball, striking out seven with just one walk, but it was not enough as the St. Bonaventure baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Central Connecticut State on Friday morning.

Pitching prevailed through the first seven innings as neither team could push a run across.

The Blue Devils finally scored the first run of the game in the top of the eighth.

Connor Fitzsimons opened the frame with a single and moved to second on another single by Franklin Jennings. A sac bunt from Nick Landell pushed the runners up to second and third and Central Connecticut broke the tie when Fitzsimons scored on a wild pitch.

Grey finished his work with a strikeout before being replaced by Nate Grant who struck out the only batter he faced in the inning to end the threat.

In the ninth, Central Connecticut scored twice more, however, for insurance.

A two-out double from Cole Peterson in the bottom of the ninth put a runner into scoring position, but the Bonnies could not pick up any further offense.

Brett Susi (1-0) rolled with seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Andrew Hinckley earned the save with two scores innings and five strikeouts.

Tyler Walter and Aaron Phillips each singled for the Bonnies.

The Bonnies and Blue Devils return to action Saturday at noon in game two of the series.
