The St. Bonaventure University baseball team begins its 2016 season with a trip to Savannah State and a four-game set against the Tigers.

St. Bonaventure and Savannah State will play single games on Friday (5 p.m) and Sunday (1 p.m.) before finishing the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

For the Bonnies, it is their earliest season-opener in program history as first pitch will be thrown on Opening Day for the 2016 NCAA Division I season.

The Tigers finished the 2015 season at 21-33 overall and went 12-12 in the MEAC.

The Bonnies return a veteran roster with nearly 20 letterwinners returning off last year's squad including four position starters and the majority of the pitching staff.

Senior Thad Johnson led the team last year in nearly every category – both at the plate and on the mound. The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award finalist last year hit .354 with 31 RBIs while also posting a 1.44 ERA on the mound serving as the team's closer.

Fellow senior Connor Grey (3-6, 5.45) and sophomore Brandon Schlimm (2-6, 4.26) anchor the starting rotation.

Sophomore shortstop Cole Peterson (.277, 14 RBIs), senior first baseman Tyler Walter (.287) and designated hitter Ted Dilts (.315) all return to the lineup as well.
