Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team fell Friday afternoon at Fred Handler Park by a score of 8-1. The Spiders were able complete the sweep of the Bonnies thanks to an outstanding effort by Dylan Stoops, Richmond's starting pitcher. Stoops threw a complete game, totaling four strikeouts and lowering his ERA to 4.61.

Steve Klimek, who took the loss on the day, started on the mound for the Bonnies and was in and out of trouble all afternoon. Freshman Ben Contento made his sixth appearance of the season in relief of Klimek.

Tyler Walter and John Novenche each recorded a double on the day for the Brown and White, going 2-4 and 2-3 respectively. Cole Peterson also added two hits for St. Bonaventure.

How It Happened:

  • Junior Tyler Walter got things going offensively for the Bonnies with a one-out double in the bottom of the first inning, however, Dylan Stoops, Richmond's starting pitcher, would retire Johnson and Dunn to end the inning.
  • After a Tanner Stanley bunt single and two walks the Spiders loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning. Ryan Cook then skied one deep to center, enabling the runner from third to score. Richmond would add an additional run on a Tyler Beckwith RBI to single to left field, giving the Spiders an early 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom half of the second, freshman John Novenche led things off with a double down the right field line. A Tyler Bell groundout allowed Novenche to advance to third, enabling him to eventually score the Bonnies first run of the game.
  • After Richmond plated two runs in the top of the third inning, the Bonnies were not able to do anything with a Tyler Kirwan leadoff walk, keeping the score at 4-1 in favor of Richmond.
  • Klimek would settle down, navigating his way through the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Jansen Fraser added to the Richmond lead (5-1) with a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Back-to-back singles by Peterson and Walter started the bottom of the sixth for the Brown and White, however, the Bonnies were not able to push anything across.
  • With runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, Ben Contento, a freshman from Schenectady, N.Y., came in to relieve Steve Klimek. A bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly pushed the Spiders lead to 7-1.
  • The Bonnies were able to get two runners on in the bottom of ninth, however, nothing would be going as St. Bonaventure would fall to Richmond 8-1.

Beyond the Boxscore:

  • Freshman John Novenche recorded the second double of his career with a rip down the right field line in third inning
  • After struggling at the plate in first two games of the season, freshman Cole Peterson recorded two hits on the day for the Bonnies.
  • Matt Eastman, a freshman Endwell, N.Y., made the second plate appearance of his career while Alex Schutz, another freshman from Ithaca, N.Y., stepped to the plate for the first time wearing the Brown and White, both in the ninth inning.
