The GoBonnies.com Athletes of the Week presented by CPL for the week ending Sept. 12 are women's soccer graduate student Cristina Torres and men's cross country freshman Clay Peets.
Torres sparked the Bonnies second-half comeback effort last Sunday against Little Three rival Niagara, scoring a pair of goals in a 1:54 span to tie the game at 2-2.
In the 64th minute, Torres got the Bonnies on the board to cut the deficit in half. Just moments later in the 65th minute, Chanel Alexander forced a turnover just outside the Niagara box and Torres pounced on the opportunity by smashing home her second goal of the contest, tying the score.
A San Juan, Puerto Rico native, Torres leads the Bonnies with five goals this season. She ranks second among all Atlantic 10 players in goals as well as shots and shots on goal.
The Bonnies are set to open Atlantic 10 play Sunday, Sept. 18 at Richmond.
Peets again wrote his name into the cross country program record books this past Saturday as he posted the fifth-fastest individual 8K time in Bona's history as he crossed the finish line in 26:16 at the Edinboro Invitational. He finished eighth overall out of 71 competitors in the race, powering St. Bonaventure to a second-place finish in the six-team field, earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
He entered the race as the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week after setting the second-fastest 5K time, and best in an official event, in Bona's history when he ran 15:42.79 at the Little Three Championship.
Peets is the first St. Bonaventure runner to capture multiple A-10 Rookie of the Week honors since Logan Caruso did so in 2018. He is the first Bonnies men's runner to ever win the award in back-to-back weeks.
Bonnies cross country has a week off before returning to competition Sept. 25 at the Anderson Invitational in Rochester.
