ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Despite the constant challenges posed to everyone during the Fall 2020 semester, St. Bonaventure student-athletes again produced impressive numbers of academic success.
Bonnies student-athletes recorded an average semester GPA of 3.351 during the fall. It marks the 31st consecutive semester that St. Bonaventure student-athletes have boasted a department GPA of better than 3.0 – more than 15 straight years. Further, the average cumulative GPA for Bonnies student-athletes is 3.38.
Fourteen St. Bonaventure teams finished the fall semester with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher while 11 were 3.25 or better. Women's lacrosse led the way for the semester at 3.681, just ahead of women's swimming and diving (3.626) and women's soccer (3.625).
A total of 291 Bonnies finished the semester with a GPA above 3.0; nearly 81 percent of Bona's 361 student-athletes. Of that group, 195 student-athletes were 3.5 or above and 41 Bonnies achieved 4.0 semester GPAs. An impressive 251 student-athletes own a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better; 190 are at 3.5 or higher and 21 are a sparkling 4.0.
"We are always proud of the work our student-athletes put into their academic pursuits, but we are even more impressed by their ability to create this type of success under the stresses of the pandemic and the challenges that were presented to all during this past semester," St. Bonaventure Director of Athletics Tim Kenney said. "We have a higher number of student-athletes than ever, so to continue raising the bar is a testament to them, to the coaches and staff, and also to the partnership between Athletics and the faculty. We also want to thank our Academic Support staff of Joel Rosencrance, Hope Thomas and Donovan Moffat for their dedication to helping our student-athletes through this challenging time."
"Success couldn't be measured with the traditional athletic trademarks of wins and losses this fall, however, our student-athletes demonstrated how academically talented they are through the high grades they earned," said Dr. Claire Watson, St. Bonaventure's Faculty Athletics Representative and Program Director for the Public Health and Health Science Majors. "These students persevered through a variety of challenges from mask-clad classes to Zoom lectures, quarantines to COVID testing. Our Bonnies worked through all of this with the knowledge that there wouldn't be a fall season and the possibility of other '20-21 seasons being postponed or altered. That's a tremendous dedication to their academics, their sports and our university."
Earlier this fall, St. Bonaventure registered a perfect NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in eight different sports (men's basketball, men's cross country/track, golf, men's soccer, women's cross country/track, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and women's tennis) as part of an overall department four-class average score of 93 percent. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate appraisal of student-athlete success.
