This week on Bonnies Insider, we have two can't miss features.
First, we spotlight the connection the Bonnies men's swimming and diving team and women's soccer programs have had with Friends of Jaclyn, an organization aiming to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric cancers by pairing them with local teams, clubs and community groups. Over a decade ago, the men's swimming and diving team paired with local native Zack Murphy during his battle with a brain tumor. That connection has lasted to this day with Zack now being a senior at St. Bonaventure, serving as a manager with the team. More recently, the women's soccer team added Rory, a sixth-grader from Kane, Pa., who has changed the lives of everyone involved with the team.
We meet with Zack, former men's swimming coach Sean McNamee, Rory's mother, Kate, and Friends of Jaclyn founder, Denis Murphy, to discuss the organization's special connection with St. Bonaventure Athletics.
In the Alumni Spotlight, we feature Bonnies basketball alumnus Tyler Relph '08, who has gone on to great success in the basketball world after helping turn the program around during his days as a player.
In three seasons with the Bonnies, the former Mr. New York Basketball honoree started 53 of 76 games and scored over 900 points during his collegiate career. During his senior year, he averaged 11.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc and led the nation by shooting 94 percent from the line.
After graduating, Relph spent a year on Coach Schmidt's coaching staff before moving to Texas to start the Tyler Relph Basketball Academy. Today, he is considered an elite basketball trainer with an innovative training company. His client list includes former NBA star Amare Stoudemire and current players such as Julius Randle, George Hill, C.J. Miles, Marcus Smart, Kadeem Allen, Thomas Bryant, Victor Oladipo and more. His training sessions take him around the world to countries such as China, Korea, Brazil and he has worked with players from every state in the United States. He's recently worked with Naismith Player of the Year Frank Mason of Kansas who was selected by the Sacramento Kings. He also worked with Sekou Doumbouya who was picked 15th overall by the Pistons in the 2019 NBA Draft.
