Bonnies Kick Off 2018 Fall Season at Navy Invitational

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team is set to begin its 2018 fall season this Friday at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, MD.

Junior Kahlei Reisinger and sophomore Buse Gunay are the lone returners for head coach Michael Bates, who is entering his 23rd season at the helm of the Bonnies.

"Kahlei had some really good matches last year," Bates said. "She has some wisdom and leadership experience that she will be able to translate to this year's team. Buse added a boost last spring when she came in as well."

Reisinger tallied 10 wins in doubles a season ago and Gunay added three wins in doubles and a pair of wins in singles after joining the program mid-year.

The Bonnies welcome five newcomers to this year's team. Penelope Abreu, Emily Stanley, Andrea Roque, Consuela van Grinsven and Paula Velilla will all make their Brown and White debuts this fall.

"We brought in five freshmen that will be able to help us right away," Bates added. "They are all at a pretty good level and quality. We have been working on a lot on doubles so far in practice, trying to see who is going to play with who in the first tournament. They are adjusting really well and they are really eager to get into some matches."

Coach Bates and the Bonnies will be raising new flags in the SBU Tennis Center this season with four out of five newcomers coming from outside of the United States. On the roster, the Bonnies have five international student-athletes from five different nations.

Abreu comes from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and she was the winner of the 2015 Junior Federations Cup. She was also a finalist in 2014. Stanley hails from Victor, N.Y. and qualified for the state tournament three times in her high school career.

Newcomer van Grinsven joins the Bonnies from Bonaire, Netherlands and Roque is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Roque was her team's most valuable player four years in a row. Velilla joins the program from Asuncion, Paraguay to join the women's tennis roster.

The full 2018 fall schedule for the women's tennis team includes a trip to Army and the ITA Regionals. The Bonnies travel to West Point, N.Y. for the Army Invitational Sept. 28-30. The ITA Regionals will be at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Oct. 11-13.
