Women's Tennis Brings Experience Into Fall Season

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team opens up its 2017 fall campaign at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, starting Friday, Sept. 15 and running until Sunday, Sept. 17. This will be head coach Michael Bates' 19th season at the helm for the Bonnies.

Also competing in the Navy Invitational are Navy, Binghamton, Fairleigh Dickinson, Lehigh, NJIT, and Monmonth.

The Bonnies and Coach Bates return almost their entire roster from last season, only losing Mara Martinez-Santori and Lauren Doversola to graduation from last year's team. Martinez-Santori played at the number one slot in singles and in doubles. Her doubles partner, senior Gabriella Bowe leads a class of three seniors into this season. Bowe, a native of the Bahamas, will look to take on a leadership role as she moves up to the top flight on the lineup. She accounted for nine wins at the number two spot last season.

"The players coming back are going to have a lot of experience, and they are going to get play more." Bates said. "We have a pretty solid team coming back in, the upperclassmen will need to step up for us this year."

Other returning seniors for the Bonnies are Francesca Chin and Dominique Mortier, who had six victories at number four singles last year.

Returning for the Bonnies as sophomores are Clara Herberts, who will miss the fall season due to injury had six wins at number three, Nicole Kozinski, and Kahlei Reisinger who totaled seven wins last season. The lone newcomer to the roster this season is junior Eleanor Gerhard, who joins the Bonnies from Hersey, Pennsylvania.

St. Bonaventure's fall schedule also includes a trip to the Army Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22 which ends on Sunday, Sept. 24. The ITA Regionals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania concludes the fall schedule for the Bonnies. That event will start on Wednesday, Oct. 18 and concludes Sunday, Oct. 22.

The Bonnies earned All-Academic honors last season from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
