Bates Wins USTA/ITA Regional Honors

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure men's and women's head tennis coach Mike Bates received recognition for his work both in the "Bona Bubble" and throughout the community Thursday, winning the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Campus and Community Outreach Award for the Eastern region.

The Campus and Community Outreach Award is given each year to a "college coach who provides a leadership role in increasing tennis participation throughout his or her community, both on and off campus."

When Bates isn't guiding the Bonnies on the court during the regular season, the Bona head man holds adult and junior tennis clinics at Bonaventure's tennis courts and at Bartlett Country Club over the summer months. Next summer, he will lead a youth tennis camp at nearby Houghton College.

In years past, Bates and his teams have held one-day clinics for boys and girls of all ages during the holiday season. In addition, Bates has directed USTA/ITA-supported initiatives such as the Campus Match Play One Day Showdown at Bonaventure.

Bates and his teams return to regular-season action Jan. 28, 2012. The men travel to State College for a 10 a.m. meeting with Penn State, while the women host Pittsburgh at 10:30 a.m.
