WEST POINT, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's tennis team travels to West Point this weekend to compete in the Eastern Championship Sept. 23-Sept. 26 on the campus of the United States Military Academy.
The championship pits schools from throughout the region, and this year more than 20 universities are scheduled to compete. Last season, the Bonnies participated along with 25 other Northeast schools in what is considered to be one of the region's largest and most competitive tournaments.
St. Bonaventure travels to Army after hosting the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and Siena College at last weekend's SBU Fall Classic. The competition's results did not count toward the team's overall record, but did count for individual records.
On Friday, Sept. 16, freshman Marissa Brossard won her singles match, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, for the first victory of her career. On Saturday, Sept. 17, the team won five of the seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches against Siena.
The competition's final day, Sunday, Sept. 18, pitted winners from the first two days against each other. Freshman Fatya Amiri won a singles match against Jasleen Sandhu of Siena, 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with junior Amanda Pallikunnel for an 8-3 doubles victory against Siena. Other Sunday winners included sophomore Andrea Pavlovic (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) and junior Kathryn Kvas (6-0, 6-1).
Amiri, Brossard and Kvas lead the team with two singles victories each. Amiri and Pallikunnel's doubles team tops the Bonnies with a pair of wins as it heads into competition this weekend.
Following the Eastern Championship, the Brown and White return home to host Mercyhurst on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. The match will be final home contest of the fall season for the Bonnies.
