WEST POINT, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure women's
tennis team wrapped up a busy weekend at the Army Invitational at
West Point on Sunday. Junior Manuela
Marin-Salcedo highlighted the action by claiming the Survival
Singles Alpha bracket championship on Saturday with a 3-0
record.
Friday
After being set back in their opening matches, sophomore Kathryn Kvas and senior Maria Barousse advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective singles brackets on the opening day of action along the banks of the Hudson River.
Bonnies freshman Meredith Haggerty and sophomore Riley Archer bowed out, 8-0, to Quinnipiac's Lavina Cristescu and Lisanne Steinart after a bye into the round of 16 in the A Doubles bracket.
Forham's Angie Dabu battled back to defeatMarin-Salcedo 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in opening round action the A Singles draw.
In the B Singles tournament, St. Bonaventure sophomore Amanda Pallikunnel lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to Emily Mathis of West Virginia. Pallikunnel was also defeated by Quinnipiac's Rachel Cantor in the consolation draw, 8-2.
Saturday
Marin-Salcedo claimed the Survival Singles Alpha bracket with a perfect 3-0 record. The Miami, Fla. Native earned an 8-1 win over Molly Montgomery of Holy Cross in her opening match before moving on with an 8-3 decision over NJIT's Jana Luste in the quarterfinal. The junior enjoyed a bye into the final, where she handed Hoftra's Sonia Tsay 8-3.
Pallikunnel earned an 8-2 win in the her first match in the bracket before an 8-5 win over Taysha Blessington of Long Island University to vault into the semifinal. NJIT's Tsay outlasted Pallikunnel, 8-1, before falling to Marin-Salcedo in the final.
Kvas, who advanced by winning her opening consolation match on Friday, was defeated 8-3 by Stony Brook's Aylin Mehter in the quarterfinals of the C Singles consolation draw. Mehter eventually moved on to the finals.
In the D Singles consolation bracket, Barousse suffered an 8-0 loss to eventual bracket champion Zellie Pfieffer in the quarterfinal.
Archer and Haggerty teamed up in the Courage Doubles competition, where the duo posted an 8-5 victory in the opener before falling in the second round, 8-6, to Bryant's Katie Francazio and Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood.
The Bonnies return to action Oct. 16 to take on Mercyhurst in Buffalo, N.Y.
