HAMILTON, N.Y. – It was a memorable start to the season as the St. Bonaventure University women's swimming and diving team capped off its first meet of the year by capturing the team title at the Justin Jennings Memorial Invitational Saturday at Colgate.
Along with the Bonnies' overall win, freshman Lina Kutsko wrote her name into the program record books with the school's best-ever time in the 100-yard butterfly.
In all, the Bonnies finished with 851 team points, easily outpacing second-place UMass (711), St. Francis (Pa.) 589.5, Cleveland State (531.5), Colgate (522) and Le Moyne (96).
Leading the way for the Brown and White was Kutsko.
Already was a part of three wins on Friday night, Kutsko broke a St. Bonaventure program record in the 100-yard butterfly. She clocked in with a time of 55.37, breaking the previous record of 55:53 that had been set in 2009 by Danielle Butler.
Kutsko won three more individual events Saturday and was a part of two relay winners. Individually she finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.02) and 100-yard freestyle (51.72).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team also consisting of Gerle Kerecsen, Casey Prentice, and Katrina Wardner rang in a winning time of 3:32.14. In the 200-yard medley relay, Kutsko teamed with Maria Rocchi, Devon McFadden, and Kerecsen to finish with a time of 1:47.31 and another victory.
McFadden would also take first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.98). The senior finished also second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.29), 100-yard butterfly (59.27), and 200-yard backstroke (2:07.88).
Kerecsen, a freshman from Budapest, would win the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.25), 100-yard IM (58.83), and 200-yard butterfly (2:23.09).
The victory marks the first for the program in an invitational meet with more than three teams competing since 2012.
"This win doesn't change our objective for the season," said St. Bonaventure head coach Brian Thomas. "It was good to see the team handle a long day in the water, and we are continuing to manage our schedule, whether that be training or even coaching."
Diving coach Stephanie Fleming was focused on consistency of the team's divers to open the season.
"I thought this was a tremendous first meet," Fleming said. "They overcame a couple of mistakes yesterday and came back very strong today. The goal of this meet was consistency and that's exactly what they did today."
