ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – During the summer months, the Reilly Center Pool had a little more activity than it usually does.
Members of the St. Bonaventure University women's swimming and diving senior class were on campus spending their summers working to make sure they finish their careers better than they've ever been before.
One of those seniors was Emily Wulff, joining teammates Devon McFadden and Maria Rocchi. The Bonnies are working to lay the foundation for the future of the program, while vying for the best season of their time in Brown and White.
The Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree sat down to talk about her work this summer and hopes for the 2017-18 season.
How do you feel you've most improved as a swimmer during your time at St. Bonaventure?
I think mentally I've grown a lot. In high school I was very reserved and coming here I found people to bring out the best in me. That helps in not only swimming, but in life.
What were some of the main things you worked on during the summer?
We did a lot of video work, a ton of underwaters. The small things that will make the difference when it comes down to racing later. A big thing I'm working on is confidence, letting go and not thinking too much. In the past I would dwell on stuff a lot. This next year I want to think about just having fun with it.
What are some goals you have for yourself this season?
I really want to hit some best times, I think that would be a cool way to end my career of competitive swimming. I don't want to have any regrets looking back at my last year. That's a big reason why we were here this summer.
What are some of your best memories associated with the program?
Honestly anything with my class. We are all super close and when we met freshman year we were all instantly best friends. We're all really different, too, so that makes for fun times. I have a ton of memories with them; we're never not laughing.
What does it mean to be associated with St. Bonaventure swimming and diving?
Coming to St. Bonaventure, I never knew it would have this much of an impact on my whole life. The people I've met through swimming and through school, just being on this campus, mean the world to me. Just being a part of something this amazing is really cool to think about.
Do you think that you and your senior classmates are putting down a strong foundation for the program going forward?
I like to think so. People haven't really stayed over the summer before, so we are trying to lay a foundation for the coming classes. We want to show them it's actually pretty fun being here over the summer and the swimming is going to really help the next year.
