Women’s Swimming Beats Canisius

Buffalo, N.Y.  –The women's swimming and diving team defeated Little Three rival, Canisius, 163-77, Friday afternoon at Koessler Athletic Center.

Senior Natalya Ghostlaw earned three individual first-place finishes, including the 1000-yard freestyle (10:54.37).  Clocking a time of 1:58.58 in the 200-yard freestyle, Ghostlaw came in ahead of second-place finisher, teammate sophomore Wendy Oleskiw (2:01.28).  Ghostlaw swam a time of 5:18.33 in the 500-yard freestyle while freshman Paige Weslaski touched in at 5:25.21, good for second place.

Oleskiw took first in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming a 54.88.  Freshman Paige Gutowski took second in the event with a 55.35.

In relay action the 200-yard medley relay team of Gutowski, senior Kathryne Valentine, junior Lanae Petty and freshman Jeannette Dietrich grabbed a first-place finish with a combined time of 1:50.59.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Oleskiw, Gutowski, Valentine and sophomore Erica Pascarella also nabbed first, swimming a total time of 3:42.44.

Valentine, Petty and Dietrich all had individual first-place finishes.  Valentine swam a 1:01.56 in the 100-yard backstroke while Dietrich clocked a 24.94 in the 50-yard freestyle.  Petty was the only one participating in the 100-yard butterfly to break 1:00.00, swimming a 59.87.

Freshman Whitney Dougherty rounded out the individual wins with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.53). 

In diving action, junior Alycia Gossett grabbed first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, scoring 190.80 and 183.59, respectively.

The Bonnies return to the pool Jan. 21 to take on Binghamton at the Reilly Center.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
