KINGSTON, R.I. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team fell to Rhode Island in the series finale, 7-3.

Desiree Gonzalez and Kaitlin Caringi both knocked homers for the Bonnies, Gonzalez her team-leading seventh of the year and Caringi her second of the 2017 campaign.

Rhode Island jumped out to a hot start with three runs in the bottom of the first on three consecutive RBI hits.

With St. Bonaventure later down 5-0, Gonzalez's solo home run in the top of the fourth served as the Bonnies' first hit of the game.

Emma Borysevicz led off the top of the fifth with a single, and Caringi then stepped in and knocked home both runs with her home run to cut the Rhody lead to 5-3.

But, after the Rams scored two more runs to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, both teams went quiet in the final frames and Rhody held on to earn the series victory, 7-3.

Kristen Hickling made the start in the circle for the Bonnies and delivered 4.1 innings of work while striking out three. Sam Wood came on in relief and retired five of the six batters she faced while striking out one.

McKenna Holtz knocked her second double of the series, while Alexandra Piergustavo worked a single to round out the five Bona hits.

The Bonnies will wrap up their 2017 regular season next weekend as they host Saint Louis for a three-game set at Joyce Field, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.
