ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- The Saint Joseph's Hawks defeated the St. Bonaventure University softball team in the third and final game of the weekend series to complete the sweep Saturday morning at Joyce Field.
The Hawks got their offense going early as they took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a homer to left field.
Saint Joseph's threatened to extend its lead in the third, but the Bonnies left a runner stranded on third as Alissa Karjel fielded one deep behind the bag and made the long throw to first in time for the final out of the inning.
The Hawks were eventually successful in extending their lead in the fifth and sixth innings, putting up four spots in both frames to take a 10-0 advantage.
St. Bonaventure found its offense in the bottom of the sixth as Nicole Antonacci grounded a slow roller behind the circle for the Bonnies' first hit of the game off Saint Joseph's Ashley Ventura. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Hailey Blencowe lined a base hit up the middle that scored Antonacci and McKenna Holtz.
But the Hawks were able to hold the Bona offense right there and earned the 10-2 win in six innings.
Josie Borysevicz was the Bona starter in the circle and delivered four-plus innings while striking out four. Rylee Hehir came on in relief in the fifth and earned six outs, three of which coming by way of a strikeout.
In the circle for Saint Joseph's, Ventura threw five no-hit innings and struck out five in her six total innings of work.
Up next, the Bonnies will play the final two games of their seven-game homestand as they host Fordham for a doubleheader on April 19. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
