Saint Joseph's Takes First Two Over @BonniesSoftball In Weekend Series

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team was swept by the Saint Joseph's Hawks in a series-opening doubleheader at Joyce Field on Friday afternoon.

Elizabeth Enovitch earned her fifth career multi-hit game in game one as she led the Bona offense with a 2-for-4 performance, driving in the lone Bona run.

Both Josie Borysevicz and Sam Wood delivered strong starts in the circle for the Bonnies. Borysevicz went the distance in game one while striking out five, and Wood tossed six frames surrendering just two runs and striking out three in game two.

With two down in the second, Saint Joseph's got on the board first. With runners on first and second, a line drive to center field brought the runner on second home, and a misplay in the Bona outfield allowed the second runner to score all the way from first to put the Hawks up, 2-0.

The Bonnies would get one back in the third. With two down and Desiree Gonzalez on first, Enovitch lofted a high popup to shallow center field that the Saint Joseph's center fielder was unable to corral cleanly on a dive, allowing Gonzalez to slide in safely into home from first.

Saint Joseph's regained the two-run lead in the fourth. Kiera Lorenzo made a fully extended snare on a line drive to her left at second base for the second out of the inning, but the Hawks were able to once again put together a two-out rally. A single, stolen base and then an RBI single put SJU up, 3-1.

The Hawks put another run on the board in the top of the seventh with a one-out walk, and an RBI double for their fourth run.

Josie Borysevicz made her first appearance in the circle for the Bonnies since April 5, dealing all seven innings, striking out five, issuing two walks and surrendering six hits.

The Bonnies managed six hits in the contest. Enovitch paced the team with two hits and Gonzalez, Piergustavo, Karjel and Deal each chipped in with one apiece.

The Hawks plated a pair in the top of the first. With two aboard, a single up the middle brought home one but a wayward throw from the Bona outfield allowed the second runner to cross the plate.

Those two runs turned out to be all the Hawks would need as Saint Joseph's Madison Clarke tossed a complete-game shutout in the circle, striking out five and surrendering just two hits.

Alissa Karjel and Hailey Blencowe earned both Bona hits, Karjel's coming in the second and Blencowe's coming in the fourth with one down.

With Blencowe aboard, Alexandra Piergustavo stepped in representing the tying run. But, she grounded into an inning-ending double play, ending the Bona threat.

Saint Joseph's then built its lead in the top of the fifth as a leadoff double eventually came around to score, taking the eventual final score of 3-0.

Wood tossed all six innings for the Bonnies, issuing just one walk with a pair of earned runs.

Kristen Hickling came on in relief for the Bonnies, earning the final three outs.

The two teams will compete in the final game of the series Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.
