PHILADELPHIA – The St. Bonaventure softball team fell at Saint Joseph's, 8-1, in game one of a three-game weekend series.
The Bonnies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they squeezed out a run in the top of the first. Emily McDonough reached on an error to leadoff the game, and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Phillips. Kelli Rohan gave the Bonnies their first hit of the game with a single that pushed McDonough to third. Morgan Phillips then came through with the big hit that scored McDonough, an RBI single to right center.
But, Saint Joseph's tied it up in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run to left field to bring the score to 1-1.
The Hawks landed two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 3-1. SJU led off the inning with a double and eventually worked a second runner on base with a single. The Bonnies nearly worked out of the jam, but both runners came home on a two-out RBI single.
Saint Joseph's opened up the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI double cashed in SJU's first run of the frame, while two two-run home runs brought the score to 8-1.
Carly Bilchak started in the circle for the Brown and White and tossed 4.1 innings. Bilchak gave up six earned runs on 10 hits. Kristen Hickling came on in relief in the fifth inning and surrendered an earned run through the final 1.2 innings of the game.
The Bonnies earned six total hits in the game. Phillips led the way with two hits, and McDonough, Rohan, Gonzalez and Farrell had one apiece.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, serving as the final two games of the regular season for both teams. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
