TAMPA, Fla. – On day one of the Under Armour Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida, St. Bonaventure fell is the first game to the Georgia State Panthers by the score of 8-1 and was edged in the afternoon game by a score of 5-4 by the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University.
Georgia State tallied one run in the first inning, three in the fourth inning and notched four more in the seventh to claim an 8-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in both teams' first game of the three-day tournament. Taylor Anderson (3 RBI) and Lauren Coleman (2 RBI) were responsible for five of the Panthers' eight runs of the game.
Despite a season-high eight hits, the Bonnies were able to score just one run today as they left 10 runners on base. SBU's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kelli Rohan rounded home off a sacrifice fly ball from teammate Katie Sinclair. Rohan led the Bonnies at the plate today with two hits.
Panthers' pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam did a great job working out of trouble, as the Bonnies presented many challenges at the plate throughout the game. For St. Bonaventure, sophomore pitcher Alexis Sloat faced 38 batters and recorded four K's.
Georgia State improved to 8-5 with today's win over St. Bonaventure. The Panthers compete out of one of the premier softball conference in the nation in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Oakland Grizzlies rallied in the sixth to edge out St. Bonaventure in game two and claim a 5-4 victory. The Bonnies recorded a season-high 10 hits in the contest, powered by Grace Rooney, Kelli Rohan, Katie Sinclair and Kelly Farrell.
The Bonnies got on the board early in the first inning after Rohan crossed home-plate from a groundout RBI for Rooney. The Grizzles went on to tie the ballgame up in the third inning after Erika Polidori homered. Two innings later, St. Bonaventure extended their lead by two runs in the fifth when Rooney tallied her second and third RBI of the game from a single to center field to score Rohan and Farrell. In the next inning, Farrell singled up the middle to score Katherine Caboot.
The Brown and White went into the bottom of the sixth leading by a score of 4-1, in hope for their second win of the season but failed to close out. After two straight lineouts the Grizzles were down to their last out of the inning. With back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second, St. Bonaventure went on to load the bases for Shannon Cleveland. Cleveland would go on to deliver as she singled to shortstop and resulted in a two-run RBI. Oakland batters continued swinging as the next two batters each drove in a runner to give themselves the first lead of the day and ultimately the victory.
Today was the first day of competition for Oakland at the USF Under Armour Invitational as they won both games. This was the Bonnies' 12th game in 14 days.
The seven team tournament will continue tomorrow as the Bonnies take the field against Campbell University at 9:30 a.m. before a matchup with tournament host USF at 2:15 p.m. Campbell was predicted to finish second in the Big South softball preseason poll while USF is coming off of a Big East tournament championship a season ago and an NCAA Tournament berth.
