ALFRED, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure led 6-5 at halftime but lost 11-9 to George Mason in its Atlantic 10 Conference women's lacrosse opener on Friday afternoon at Alfred University's Merrill Field.
LeighAnn Stauffer scored three times in the first half to help stake the Bonnies to the lead. She then made it 7-5 favor St. Bonaventure just over three minutes into the second half.
Rachel Obergon, however, struck for back-to-back goals four minutes apart to tie the game. Obergon then set up a goal by Alexa McGovern with 15:56 remaining that gave the Patriots an 8-7 lead. McGovern scored again just over a minute later to make it 9-7. Jacquelyn Spalding scored the eventual game-winner at the 10:09 mark, again off a pass from Obergon.
With 5:54 left, Katie Mascolo's goal made it 11-7.
Stauffer and Mikayla Place scored for the Bonnies in the final 1:08 but St. Bonaventure could not overcome the four-goal deficit.
Stauffer led the Bonnies with five goals. Place scored twice, and Scarlet Jaworski and Mary Maestri scored one goal apiece. Bonnies goalie Sara Schlagenhauf was outstanding as she made 14 saves on the day.
Obergon led George Mason with three goals and four assists, while Spalding also tallied three goals and Mascolo scored a twice. Mason goalie Caroline Brouse made nine saves.
The Bonnies will return to action on Sunday against George Washington. That game is scheduled for 1:00 at McGraw-Jennings Field if the field conditions permit.
