NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – A second half rally fell short as the St. Bonaventure's women's lacrosse team lost at Niagara on Thursday afternoon, 18-13, at Niagara Field.
The Bonnies trailed 4-3 early in the contest when the Purple Eagles took control, scoring eight unanswered goals to take a 12-3 lead into halftime.
St. Bonaventure opened the second half strong with three straight goals by Leighn Ann Stauffer, Scarlet Jaworski and Madison Appel. Niagara countered with goals by Kristen Winter and a free position goal from Kayla Smith to make it 14-6. Stauffer, Appel and Jaworski again scored in succession to pull the Bonnies within five at 14-9, but that was as close as the visitors could pull the rest of the way as Niagara's superior depth helped it prevail.
St. Bonaventure goalie Sara Schlagenhauf, who faced 30 shots from the Purple Eagles, made 12 saves.
Niagara outshot St. Bonaventure 43-25 for the day. Carrie-Jo Farrugia finished with four goals and three assists for Niagara, while Danielle Maio and Brittany Delano each contributed four points.
The Bonnies drop to 0-5 while Niagara evened its record at 3-3.
St. Bonaventure will next face Iona on Sunday at Alfred University at 1 p.m.
