ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Saint Joseph's (7-5, 1-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) scored the first seven goals of the second half to turn a 5-5 halftime tie against St. Bonaventure (5-6, 0-3 A-10) into a 13-7 win Sunday at McGraw-Jennings Field in the Bonnies first contest of the year on their home pitch.
Six different Bonaventure players scored goals, with two tallies and an assist coming from LeighAnn Stauffer (pictured). Taylor Ventre added two assists for the Bonnies, who dropped their fourth in a row after starting the season 5-2.
Bonaventure got off to a much-needed fast start against the Hawks as it scored three of the first four goals of the game to take a 3-1 lead just more than five minutes in, capped by Erin Thomas goal. However, Saint Joe's scored four of the next five to take a 5-4 lead before Mikayla Place knotted the contest at 5-5 with just three seconds remaining in the first half.
Unfortunately for SBU, it wasn't able to capitalize on the momentum to close the stanza as the Hawks tallied those seven goals to open the second half in just more than 10 minutes and never looked back.
For the game, SJU attempted 13 shots in both the first and second halves en route to out-shooting the Bonnies, 26-17. Sara Schlagenhauf made nine saves in net for the Brown and White.
St. Bonaventure will look to get back on track in a mid-week game at Bucknell next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Bonnies return to A-10 action next weekend when they travel to the capital district to face George Washington on Friday and Richmond on Sunday.
