* 52.9 percent of Crowley’s 185 wins at Bona’s
have come in the last four years (98).
* Midway through the 2006-07 season, Crowley had a 57-119 record
at Bonaventure (62 games below .500). Since then, he has gone
128-59 (69 games over .500). That represents the best turnaround in
the nation of any coach who has remained at the same
institution.

Jim Crowley enters his 13th season as St. Bonaventure’s head coach and 17th overall year on the SBU bench in the 2012-13 season.
Under Crowley's guidance, the Bonnies have developed into a consistently competitive and hard-working unit on and off the court. His dedication and commitment to the program has established a strong foundation of future success for the Brown and White. Crowley's passion for the game has proved to be contagious as his energy and desire to win is evident every time his team steps on the floor.
Crowley is coming off the best coaching season of his career in 2011-12 when he led St. Bonaventure to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and was named ESPN.com National Coach of the Year. The Bonnies went 31-4 – their first-ever 30-win season – and in the process became the smallest active Division I school to ever advance to the Sweet 16.
For his efforts, Crowley was also named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) Women’s Division I Coach of the Year. Bonaventure went a perfect 14-0 through the A-10 regular season en route to becoming the smallest school in league history to win the A-10 regular-season crown.
During the course of the record-establishing 2011-12 season, Crowley won his 200th career game on Dec. 7 against Indiana. The victory was one of three BCS triumphs for the Bonnies during the regular season as they also defeated St. John’s and West Virginia.
Crowley also oversaw the program’s first-ever national ranking as on Feb. 6, 2012 it entered the Associated Press Poll for the first time at No. 25. The Bonnies would finish the 2011-12 season at No. 21 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll – also a program-first. St. Bonaventure concluded its season with an RPI of 14 – the highest in program history – and 23 spots ahead of the next closest A-10 member.
Crowley guided the Brown and White through a daunting non-conference schedule as the Bonnies faced eight teams which made postseason appearances the year before, including three which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. However, Crowley paced his team to a 7-1 mark in those games, including a resounding 3-0 record versus schools which went to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Additionally, Crowley’s Bonnies finished with the best road record in the entire nation in 2011-12 – a perfect 13-0. Only national champion Baylor (11-0) and Green Bay (11-0) were also undefeated on the road.
Crowley coached two Atlantic 10 First Team selections in Jessica Jenkins and Megan Van Tatenhove in 2011-12, and both were also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team. It marked the first year in program history with multiple first team selections and multiple academic choices. Crowley has consistently had his players perform on the court and in the classroom as 2011-12 marked the 10th time in his 12 years in charge of Bonaventure that Crowley has had a player earn all-academic honors – the most of any school in the league over that time.
Crowley also coached Alaina Walker, who became the program’s first Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team selection in 2011-12. The Bonnies concluded the season leading the A-10 in scoring defense for the third consecutive year.
For the third straight year in 2010-11, Crowley guided his team
to a 20-win season, finishing with a 21-12 record and trip to the
Second Round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
St. Bonaventure finished tied for 3rd in the always-competitive
Atlantic 10 Conference with a 9-5 record.
The season, at the time, was the third-best in program history,
bested only by the 2009-10 and 2008-09 seasons in which the Brown
and White tallied 23 wins in each. The Bonnies set a program
single-season record for 3-pointers made in 2010-11 by knocking
down 224 – 32 more than the second-best year in 2008-09.
In the 2009-10 campaign, the Bonnies tied a program record set the
year before with 23 wins, including a program-record 21
regular-season wins. They advanced to the WNIT for the second
consecutive year, and in the process became just one of five A-10
schools to have four consecutive winning seasons.
The team opened the season with 11 consecutive wins – the
longest winning streak in program history. It also finished in the
top 10 in the nation in four different categories: free-throw
percentage (80.3/5th), 3-point percentage (38.5/7th), turnovers
(13.6/7th) and scoring defense (52.7/9th).
Following a season in which the club tallied an all-time school
record with 23 wins, Crowley and the Bonnies have launched
themselves into a promising position for the future. For the
2008-09 season, Crowley was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. He
was the first coach in program history to win coach of the year. He
also earned the New Balance - Basketball Coaches Association of New
York (BCANY), Women's Division I Coach of the Year.
The 2008-09 season was one of the most successful campaigns in St.
Bonaventure history, as the Bonnies broke the previous win record
by five. Crowley guided the Brown and White to their first
postseason appearance and highlighted it with two wins against Big
East foe West Virginia and Big Ten contender Wisconsin.
In 2008, the Bonnies beat No. 24/23 Michigan State for the third
time in program history. After the victory, St. Bonaventure
received a vote in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time in program
history. The team’s 15-5 start was the best start after 20
games since the program’s inception.
The Bonnies won nine Atlantic 10 games in the 2008-09 season,
including wins against Temple and Charlotte, setting a then-program
record for most conference wins in a single season. The 55-52
victory against Temple was the first win against the Owls in seven
years.
St. Bonaventure finished the season in a four-way tie for fourth
place in the A-10 with its 9-5 conference record. Its seventh seed
in the 2009 A-10 Championships tied the 2007-08 club with the
highest ranking in the tournament since 1996-97.
Following a record-setting season on the court, a pair of Bonnies
received postseason recognition from the Atlantic 10. Dana Mitchell
earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team for the second
year, while Katelyn Murray earned a spot on the Academic
All-Conference squad for the second consecutive year.
Under the tutelage of Crowley, Mitchell developed into one of the
premier players in the conference. Mitchell ranks 2nd on the
all-time Bona scoring chart with 2,011 career points, and holds
five program records, including being the only member of the
2,000-point and 700-rebound club.
The Brown and White jumped out of the 2007-08 opening tip to the
tune of a then program-best 11-2 start before finishing
non-conference play with a then all-time high of 12 victories
heading into Atlantic 10 action. Crowley led the Bonnies to their
highest league finish since 1996-97 as the team exceeded preseason
expectations with a seventh-place finish. The club's six league
triumphs were the most since 2001-02.
Crowley and Bonnies achieved great success despite taking on a
heavy road schedule, including a 10-game span away from the Reilly
Center. The Brown and White notched the fifth most true road
triumphs in the nation with 10, and matched the longest road
winning streak in school history with six. The club's 18-win season
was highlighted by a 63-60 upset of No. 14/13 George Washington on
Bob Lanier Court. The victory marked the program's second ever win
over a nationally ranked opponent in the 37-year history of women's
basketball at St. Bonaventure.
Following a record-setting season on the court, a pair of Bonnies
earned postseason honors from the Atlantic 10. Mitchell followed up
an All-Rookie campaign with a selection to the All-Conference
Second Team, while Murray earned a spot on the Academic
All-Conference squad. For her sophomore performance, Mitchell
became the third Bonnie and fifth sophomore ever to lead the
conference in scoring thanks to an 18.1 point per game average.
During the 2006-07 season, Crowley navigated the team to a program
record six-straight wins away from the Reilly Center, including a
victory at Big Ten affiliate Michigan and a Wagner Holiday
Tournament championship. Following the lead of their coach, the
Brown and White reeled off seven road wins and 11 overall away
from the St. Bonaventure campus. Crowley and his club entered the
Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with 10 victories.
Crowley steered the Bonnies to a 5-9 mark in conference play
during the ‘06-‘07 season, including a four-spot jump
in the final standings from the previous season. The club advanced
to the second round of the 2007 A-10 Championships with a victory
against Massachusetts in the opening round.
At the conclusion of the season, two members of the team received
All-Conference accolades for their stellar performances. Forward
Mitchell was named to the A-10's All-Rookie Team, while senior
forward Audrey Latendresse was an A-10 Academic All-Conference
selection.
Throughout his career on the southwestern New York campus, Crowley
has displayed the capability of developing his players to maximize
their potential. His motivational and teaching skills have
facilitated the advancement of his women into all-around and
fundamental students of the game.
Latendresse matured into one of the upper-echelon forwards in the
Atlantic 10 by her final season under the watchful eye of Crowley.
The Repentigny, Quebec native arrived on campus with little
experience outside of the paint, but soon established a smooth
stroke from behind the arc. In the company of Crowley, Latendresse
left the school as then only the seventh player in program history
to post 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
In 2005-06, Crowley piloted his team to a quick start as the
Bonnies were triumphant in their first five contests, including a
tournament title at the St. Bona Shootout. Following the season,
senior guard Stefanie Collins received honorable mention
All-Conference honors and freshman forward Ashley Edwards was named
to the All-Rookie Team.
Throughout her career at St. Bonaventure, Crowley helped mold
Collins into a perennial All-Conference selection. The 2001-02 A-10
Rookie of the Year became the first player in program history to
receive All-Conference honors in each of her four seasons in the
Brown and White. She developed into a dangerous scoring threat that
vaulted her into sixth place on the school's all-time scoring chart
with 1,421 career points. After her college eligibility expired in
2005-06, Collins continued with basketball as a professional in
Europe.
Crowley escorted his team to several impressive victories in the
2003-04 campaign. The Brown and White posted an incredible victory
over former Conference-USA member and current Big East affiliate
Marquette. Following their defeat to the Bonnies, the Golden Eagles
advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bonnies
also picked up five conference victories, including a sweep of
Massachusetts.
In 2001-02, the Brown and White closed with a 13-15 record and a
7-9 mark in the competitive A-10 conference slate. Courtney
Mattingly was named to the All-Conference Second Team following her
role in the team's resurgence after recording averages of 13.4
points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Following the season, the Bonnies
were pegged as a program on the rise by Womenscollegehoops.com for
their rapid improvement.
Since Crowley's appointment as head coach, the women's basketball
program has made major strides in the classroom. His ability to
find student-athletes who excel both on and off the court has
proved to be a tremendous asset to the University and has helped
prepare his players for life after basketball.
Led by the Academic All-America selection of Murray for two
consecutive years, multiple members of the Brown and White enjoyed
individual success in the academic arena during the past year. The
Harrisburg, Pa. product become the second player in program history
to earn Academic All-America as she was named to the ESPN The
Magazine Second Team in 2009 and the third team in 2008 with a
4.0 grade point average in biology.
For the sixth time in the last seven academic years, St.
Bonaventure earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) Academic Team Honor Roll as the Bonnies ranked
16th in the country with a cumulative team grade point average of
3.35. The Brown and White earned their highest academic ranking in
school history following the 2006-07 season with a GPA of 3.594,
which ranked third in the nation.
Three members of the 2008-09 squad earned a spot on the fall and
spring Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.5 GPA or better),
while five qualified for the Dean's List (3.25 GPA or better)
during the spring session.
Five Bonnies capped the 2007-08 academic year with perfect grade
point averages in the classroom, and eight returning letterwinners
headed into the fall with cumulative GPA's higher than 3.0.
Furthermore, six members of the 2006-07 squad earned a spot on the
fall and spring Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll while five
qualified for the Dean's List during the spring session.
From the time he has taken over the reins of the program in 2000,
each of Crowley's teams have posted a grade point average of 3.0 or
better. Former Bonnies’ assistant coach Courtney Mattingly
was a two-time A-10 Academic All-Conference selection during her
playing days under Crowley. His efforts in providing players with
the proper guidance and support in pursuit of academic excellence
has led to the graduation of every senior to wear the Brown and
White since he has been in charge.
In past summers, Crowley has provided his coaching skills for the
Western New York region in the Empire State Games. In 2005, he
guided the WNY open division women's team to a bronze medal.
Crowley coached Murray and former Bonnie Erica Schiefen in the
summer of 2006.
Crowley spent four years as an assistant women's coach on the
Bonnies' bench before taking the lead role in March of 2000. As an
assistant under Marti Whitmore, he helped secure double-digit
winning seasons for the Brown and White in each of his four seasons
as Whitmore's top aid. In two of his four years in the second seat,
St. Bonaventure advanced to the second round of the Atlantic 10
tournament.
Prior to his arrival at St. Bonaventure, Crowley spent three
seasons as the head women's basketball coach at his alma mater,
Keuka College. The Windsor, N.Y. native compiled a 39-37 record at
the Division III school. In his second season, the Storm posted a
record of 18-10 en route to a spot in the ECAC Tournament
championship.
To display his versatility as a coach, Crowley also served as the
head men's and women's cross country coach in 1994 and 1995.
A 1993 graduate of Keuka, Crowley received a bachelor's degree in
secondary English education. As an undergraduate student, he was a
four-year letterman in men's basketball and captained the club in
his final three seasons on the court.
