ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Four Bonnies posted double-figure scoring led by 19 points apiece from senior Mariah Ruff and freshman Emily Calabrese as the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team raced past Rhode Island Wednesday night at the Reilly Center, 81-70.
St. Bonaventure improves to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play while Rhode Island slumps to 2-17, 0-6.
The Bonnies spread the wealth on Wednesday evening, highlighted by one player who is in the midst of putting the final touches on one of the best careers in program history while another turned in the best performance of her first season.
Ruff, who entered the night as the leading scorer in Atlantic 10 conference play at over 22 points per game, delivered her first double-double of the year with 19 points and 11 rebounds, adding six assists in a full 40-minute effort.
Calabrese, meanwhile, easily eclipsed her previous career high in scoring while netting 19 points of her own to go along with six rebounds and two steals.
After the two teams exchanged the lead three times and shared five ties in the early going, St. Bonaventure surged ahead late in the first quarter. Bona captured full momentum when Ruff drained a 50-foot bomb from well past half court to beat the first quarter buzzer.
The Bonnies used an 18-3 run spanning the end of the first quarter and opening three minutes of the second, taking a double-digit lead for the first time following a trey by Rhianna Council with 7:02 left in the half.
By intermission, the Bonnies' lead swelled to 41-25 and they continued to pull away with a hot start to begin the third quarter. Bona opened the second half on a 16-4 break and grew the lead to 28 points midway through the third.
St. Bonaventure shot over 49 percent for the game (28-for-57) and owned a 39-38 advantage in rebounding for the game. All six of the team's players to see time Wednesday had nine or more points.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting Davidson at 2 p.m.
