ANNAPOLIS, MD – St. Bonaventure women's basketball senior Mariah Ruff became the 22nd member of the program's 1,000-point club and the Bonnies used a hard-charging fourth quarter to get past UMBC, 63-54, in the first round of the Navy Classic Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies are now winners of three straight to improve to 4-2 on the year while UMBC falls to 1-5.
Junior Mckenna Maycock continued her tremendous play with a new career-high of 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. The all-time leading scorer in Western New York high school basketball history made it a double-double effort by also matching her career-best of 12 rebounds along with five assists.
Ruff reached her career milestone with a put-back at the 7:38 mark of the third quarter for points 1,000 and 1,001.
The teams shared eight ties and exchanged the lead 11 times in a contest that saw the Bonnies have to battle back from a five-point hole with under two minutes to play in the third. At the finish, the Bonnies outscored UMBC 19-9 in the final quarter to erase doubt on the way to the win.
A jumper by Lakiah Sims gave the Retrievers a 45-40 lead with 2:47 remaining, and that score stood until the 1:29 mark when Arielle Harvey made one of two tries at the line. The final points of the quarter went to the Bonnies as Maycock sank a corner trey to pull within one heading for the fourth.
UMBC built a lead of four again following a traditional three-point play by Laura Castaldo nine seconds into the fourth, but the Retrievers wouldn't score again for over four minutes.
The defense then took over.
Bona limited UMBC to 4-of-15 shooting and 0-of-7 from distance in the fourth quarter as the Bonnies raced ahead.
A three from Danielle Migliore followed by a steal and fast break layup by Jalisha Terry pushed Bona back ahead, 49-48, with 8:18 to play. A block by Rhianna Council led to another bucket in transition by Migliore as a 6-0 sprint from the Bonnies shifted the momentum.
Allison McGrath made it a 51-50 score with 5:34 to play following a bucket inside for UMBC to snap their cold spell, but a free throw from Ruff and another defensive stop set the stage for the Bonnies senior guard to attack the lane for a two-possession edge.
Another one-and-done possession by UMBC allowed Bree Paulson to find Maycock open in the far corner again for the largest lead of the day to that point, 57-50. Fittingly, Maycock added the final dagger with 90 seconds to go by netting her fourth triple off a feed from Ruff for the final points of the game.
Migliore finished with 11 points and five rebounds while freshman Emily Calabrese registered eight points and nine rebounds.
The Brown and White had its best day of the season on the boards, owning the rebounding margin 50-32. St. Bonaventure also put home 14 second chance points.
Castaldo paced UMBC with 17 points while Oliver added 10 points and seven assists.
The Bonnies now set their sights on the Navy Classic championship game vs. host Navy, winners over North Dakota State in the second game of the day, Sunday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.
