When the Greek A1 women's basketball season began last week, one of the stars of opening weekend was Katie Healy. The 2016 St. Bonaventure graduate and Western New York native finished with 18 points and nine rebounds in a win for Panionios over Dafni Agioy.
Of course, a strong start to the new season shouldn't come as any surprise as Healy has made herself one of the stars of the league.
The former Bonnie turned in a stellar first year as a professional last season, playing in 22 of 23 games for the Athens-based team. During the 2016-17 campaign, she averaged a double-double with 17.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while shooting better than 47 percent from the floor (130-274). She was a dominant force for her team, leading the squad in scoring and rebounding and also handed out nearly three assists per game.
Panionios is a member of the A1 Ethniki women's basketball league which is comprised of 10 teams all based in Greece.
One of the top players in Bonnies women's basketball history, the Lancaster native was a multi-time All-Atlantic 10 selection. She finished her career as one of just two Bonnies players to total over 1,600 points with 800 rebounds, ranking fourth in career scoring (1,708 points) and third in rebounds (833) and also holds the program record for blocks (155).
Healy helped lead the Bonnies to the Second Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament before graduating.
The Panionios schedule runs through the end of April.
