ELIAT, ISRAEL – One of the newest members of the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team has spent her summer getting some incredible experience against the best competition in the world.
London native Abigail Johnson, who will be a freshman for the Bonnies this fall, represented her home nation of Great Britain this month at the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship in Israel.
Johnson played in all seven games for Great Britain and was one of the tournament's biggest forces on the boards. During group play, she ranked fourth in the tournament amongst 134 players by averaging 9.3 rebounds per game. Her whopping 21.1 rebounds per 40 minutes led all players in the tournament.
In a win over Belarus, Johnson became just the fifth Great Britain U20 player to pull down 15 rebounds in a single game. In all, she had double digit rebounds in four games – 13 vs. the Czech Republic, 12 vs. Romania and 10 against Croatia in addition to her 15 vs. Belarus.
She also averaged 7.9 points in 17.7 minutes per game as Great Britain finished eighth in the field of 12 national teams.
This summer marked the third time Johnson has been selected to a national team – she also played for Great Britain at the 2016 FIBA U20 European Championship (5.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg) as well as the 2013 U16 European Championship (6.5 ppg, 14.8 rpg).
Johnson will soon join her new Bonnies teammates on campus at St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies open the 2017-18 season on Nov. 10 at home vs. Niagara.
