PITTSBURGH, PA. – The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (9-14, 2-6) fell to Duquesne (18-3, 7-1) on the road by a score of 61-33, dropping their fourth straight. Katie Healy led the scoring for the Bonnies with 13.
The Bonnies trailed just 5-4 in the early going but allowed the Dukes to get out and run. Duquesne commenced on an 8-0 run that quickly turned into a 28-6 run to open up a 33-10 Duquesne lead.
The Bonnies offense struggled throughout the remainder of the first half. They scored just 14 points in the opening frame on 5-16 shooting for 31.3 percent. On the other side, Dukes forced the Brown and White into 14 turnovers, scored 13 points off those turnovers and dropped 37 total. Only Georgia (41) and N.C. State (39) scored more first half points against the Bonnies this season.
The second half was more of the same. Duquesne opened up the half with a triple and built their largest lead of the game, 45-17, by the 15:06 mark. Ortega and Healy did their best to keep the Bonnies alive but their efforts were all for not. Duquesne would run away with the 61-33 victory.
Katie Healy's game-high 13 points put her in double-figures for the fifth straight game, tied for the longest such streak of any Bonnie this season. Doris Ortega added 11 as the only other double-figure scorer for the Brown and White. Duquesne put three players in double-figures but none had more than April Robinson's 11.
The Bonnies return to action on Sunday (Feb. 10) to host VCU. That game will serve as the Bonnies' Play 4Kay Pink Day game. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The 33 points was a season-low for the Bonnies. They were shut out from three (0-9) for the third time already this season. A freshman has led the Bonnies in scoring each of the last three games. Duquesne forced 21 turnovers and scored 19 points off of them.
