ST. BONAVENTURE – The St. Bonaventure University men's tennis team will open up the 2017 fall season at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, starting Friday, Sept. 22 and concluding on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Also competing in this weekend's Navy Invitational are Navy, Delaware, Monmouth, Temple, George Washington, Mary Washington, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, George Mason, and Christopher Newport.
Head coach Michael Bates, who is starting his 22nd season at St. Bonaventure, returns all but one player from last season on this year's roster. He retains his top two singles players in seniors Victor Blanco, who had seven victories at number one and Hector Martinez, who tallied 10 wins at the number two flight.
Patwardhan recorded seven wins at number four, three wins at number three, and two wins at number two. Malmberg was responsible for 14 total wins last season. Tallying eight total victories for the Bonnies was Rutkowski, while Garcia added five total wins.
"We have a lot of experience coming back," Bates said. "The fall schedule is mostly tournaments, so that will give us a chance to look at different doubles combinations, as well as the new guys coming in being able to get a feel for the competition."
Coach Bates has three newcomers to the program in Logan Cross, Darrel Harxhi, and Joseph Blakeley. Cross comes from nearby Olean High School, while Harxhi travels from Ontario, Canada to join the Bonnies this season. Blakely joins St. Bonaventure all the way from Bath, England; he will run for the Bonnies cross country team during the fall before focusing on tennis during the spring season.
The Bonnies' fall schedule also includes a trip to the Army Invitational running Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30 in West Point, N.Y.
October 6-8, The Bonnies will host their 10th Fall Invitational here at St. Bonaventure University. It will be the first Fall Invitational for St. Bonaventure since the 2013-14 season.
The Brown and White will conclude their fall season with a trip to the ITA Regionals Wednesday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
