Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Home Victory

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team swept three doubles matches and four Bonnies added singles wins in a 5-2 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday at the SBU Fitness Center.

In the spring season opener for St. Bonaventure (1-0), the senior duo of Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara picked up where it left off in the fall with an 8-3 triumph over Lawson Barter and Andres Rosa at No. 1 doubles. The Bona pair improved to 7-4 on the year.

Elliot Fanshel and Javier Ortiz teamed for a 9-8 (3) win over Sergio Caravajal and Washi Gervais at second doubles for the Bonnies, while SBU's third doubles team of Celso de Vera Rehberger and Trevor Haskell prevailed 8-4 over Juan Pardo and Matt Jurjevich.

Fanshel and Guevara, who led the Bonnies, with four singles victories over the fall season, added to that total on Sunday. At first singles, Fanshel topped Rosa, 7-6 (2), 6-1, while Guevara bested Carvajal, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.

Ortiz prevailed at fourth singles after St. Francis' Chris Jimenez retired in the first set with Ortiz holding a 3-2 lead. At No. 6 singles, Haskell downed Barter, 6-0, 4-6, 10-6.

Gervais and Pardo led St. Francis (0-3) with singles victories over Yanez and de Vera Rehberger, respectively.

The Bonnies remain at home for a matchup against Robert Morris at 1 p.m. Friday.
