Men’s Tennis Heads To Buffalo To Battle In UB Invitational
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team will compete in this weekend's UB Invitational Friday through Sunday at the University Tennis Club on the campus of the University at Buffalo.
The Bonnies will face Niagara University Friday at 3 p.m., Kennesaw State Saturday at Noon and Buffalo Sunday at Noon.
For Niagara, the match will be the first of its season, while Kennesaw State will also be playing in its season-opening tournament this weekend. The Owls of Kennesaw return five starters from a team that set program records last season for most overall and conference wins in a single season with nine and three, respectively. The Georgia school is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
UB kicked off its fall schedule last weekend as the Bulls participated in the Princeton Invitational. The Bulls went 9-9 in singles matches and 4-3 in doubles competition.
St. Bonaventure travels to Buffalo after participating in the Navy Blue Invite to open its season with matches against the United States Naval Academy, Temple and Binghamton Sept. 9-11. The competition did not count toward the team's individual record, but did record individual results.
The doubles team of sophomore Elliot Fanshel and junior Luis Guevara won its match against Navy, 8-4. Sophomore Javier Ortiz and freshman Trevor Haskell teamed up for a doubles triumph over Temple, 9-7. Ortiz also earned victory in his singles match against Binghamton, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6), and Guevara won a singles match against Temple, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
The Bonnies were not scheduled to compete in the UB Invitational when the season schedule was released earlier this month. Following the invitational, the Brown and White return home to host the SBU Fall Classic Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
