Men’s Tennis Sweeps Saint Joe’s, Advances In Consolation Bracket
BELLEVILLE, Ill. – For the second consecutive day rain moved the men's tennis team's match to an alternate location, but it didn't faze the Bonnies as they swept Saint Joseph's on Saturday, 4-0, to advance in the consolation bracket at the A-10 Championship.
Originally scheduled to be played on the outdoor courts at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in downtown St. Louis, weather caused the match to be moved indoors to the Kings Point Sports Club. The exact same scenario played out for St. Bonaventure in the opening round on Friday, and the exact same result – a 4-0 sweep, played out for the club on Saturday.
After dropping the first doubles match to the Hawks, the partnership of seniors Enric Larregola and Mikhail Sudakov pulled the Bonnies even with an 8-5 decision out of the No. 2 doubles slot. Senior Chris Post then teamed with Oscar Yanez in the No. 1 doubles position to earn a 9-7 decision and the doubles point.
The Brown and White carried the momentum of the doubles point into the singles matches, as all six Bonnies jumped out to early leads with first-set victories.
Needing to win just three of the six singles matches to advance in the consolation bracket, Larregola picked up the first with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jeff Kessler out of the No. 2 slot. Yanez followed with another second-set blanking against his opponent, Peter Cognetti, en route to a 6-4, 6-0 triumph. Sudakov then closed the door on the Hawks with a 7-5, 6-4 victory out of the No. 3 singles position.
With the win, St. Bonaventure advances to the 5th-place match on Sunday morning against the winner of a Saturday evening match between Charlotte and Richmond. The match – scheduled for 8 a.m. at Dwight Davis – will be the final of the year for the Bonnies, and final in the careers of Sudakov, Larregola and Post.
