Men's swimming opens at WNY Invite
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The men's swimming team kicked off its 2009-10 campaign at the Western New York Invite, held at the University of Buffalo. The team hopes to build on a strong finish from last season and received solid performances from its returners and newcomers.
Senior Mariusz Michalik highlighted the meet with four top performances including two first places to lead the Bonnies. Michalik teamed with sophomore Peter Koenig and juniors Dawid Kundzik and Jared Robinson to earn a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.37.
In his individual races, Michalik faired even better earning his firsts in the 200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard IM. In the breaststroke he touched in at 2:11.69, just ahead of teammate Mike Dansa (2:12.85). He picked up his other first place finish in the medley, clocking in at 4:17.10. The Poland native finished with in third place in the 200 IM (2:00.44).
The Brown and White found even more success with their 200-yard freestyle relay team when Kundzik, Robinson, Chris Baker and Francisco Neives touched the wall in 1:27.57 for a second place finish.
Junior Robinson also picked up three top finishes coming in just behind Dansa in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:46.71 for third place. In the 50-yard freestyle, he picked up the number two spot finishing at 21.78.
Kundzik earned two other top places outside the relays, placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (47.69) and 100-yard butterfly (52.50).
Sophomore Dansa also picked up a second and a third place finish in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, coming in at 1:46.66 and 4:53.48, respectively.
Newcomers Elias Homerin and Ethan Rowan both placed in their events. Homerin finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.26). Rowan finished in third in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 9:59.79.
The Bonnies don't have to wait long to compete, as they host Penn State on Tuesday in the Reilly Center. The diving portion of the meet is scheduled to being at noon.
