ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure opened its exhibition season with a 4-2 win over NAIA school Roberts Wesleyan on Aug. 19 in Rochester.
After a slow start that saw Roberts Wesleyan score on its first two shots of the game, Bona battled back and emerged with a 3-2 lead at halftime behind goals from three seniors. Nick Blair made it 2-1 off Andy Garcia's corner kick. Geron DuPorte then tied the contest at 2-2 on a penalty kick goal. DuPorte then sent Jahmal Cameron in on a breakaway which the striker converted.
"We played very well after the first 15 minutes once we got used to the tempo of the game," said Bonnies coach Bill Brady. "Many opportunities were created, and Andy Garcia and Geron DuPorte really dictated the pace of the game in the midfield."
In the second half, with about 10 minutes to play, freshman Kevin Omokhua was sent in on a breakway by Duporte and he finished with ease to cap off the scoring.
Junior Sean Eyde played the entire game in net and recorded three saves.
"We were without seven players due to injury and eligibility issues, so overall I am very happy with the the effort the team gave," Brady said. "Roberts is always a legitimate national contender in the NAIA."
