KINGSTON, R.I. – For over 80 minutes Wednesday night in its Atlantic 10 opener, the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team held control at Rhode Island. Unfortunately for the Bonnies, the Rams roared back with two goals in the final eight and a half minutes to hand SBU a heartbreaking defeat, 3-2, at the URI Soccer Complex.

Bonnies junior Isaiah Barrett scored his first career goal in the 18th minute to give St. Bonaventure the early lead. Assisting him was Kieran Toland who sent a ball into the box where Barrett was waiting to finish it off with a header for the 1-0 edge.

Rhode Island would tie the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute on a goal from Dominik Richter, but the tie would be short-lived as the Bonnies would respond just six minutes later.

Seniors Toland and Paul Afful teamed up in the 41st minute to re-take the lead. Afful found Toland, who fired a shot that the goalkeeper could not save. It was Toland's third goal of the season and the Bonnies seized a 2-1 advantage.

That lead would stand until the waning minutes of the contest.

The Rams would tie the game late in the second half. Nicklas Middrup found the back of the net in the 82nd minute, tying the score at 2-2.

Rhode Island's Stravos Zarokostas then scored in the 88th minute to give the Rams the lead and the win.

Isaiah Wilson and Kosi Nwafornso had a pair of chances in the 21st minutes, with both shots going high. Wilson and Nwafornso would have another opportunity in the 24th minute. Both of their shots were blocked by the Rhode Island defense.

Nwafornso had five shots to lead the Bonnies on the night, and Wilson added three shots.

SBU held a 12-10 edge in shots during the first half, but Rhode Island upped the pressure trailing late and finished with a 23-15 lead in shot attempts.

The Bonnies return home Saturday afternoon when they meet Davidson in their second Atlantic 10 game. The match is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at the Marra Athletics Complex.
