LORETTO, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team ended its non-conference schedule in winning fashion by defeating St. Francis (Pa.), 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
In the 83rd minute junior Kosi Nwafornso hit a shot from 18 yards out that went past the goalkeeper to give the Bonnies the lead, and one they wouldn't relinquish. It was Nwafornso's fourth goal of the season and first game-winner. Saturday's winning tally is the second game-winner of Nwafornso's career and first since his freshman season. Nwafornso received a pass from freshman Nicola Bonso before burying his winning strike into the back of the net.
The Bonnies were held to just two shots in the first half. Kyle Kleckner had the Bonnies' first shot in the 40th minute, but it was blocked by a Red Flash defender. Jacob Dyck also had his shot blocked in the 44th minute.
After the teams headed to the intermission break in a scoreless draw, St. Bonaventure came to life in the second half. Kleckner and Dyck both fired shots on net in the 54th minute, but both were saved by St. Francis goalkeeper Marcus Rojas. Eventually the Bonnies broke through in the waning minutes for yet another bit of late heroics, continuing a theme from earlier this season.
Junior goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis made five saves in net to earn the shutout, his third of the season.
The Bonnies improve to 4-4-2, while St. Francis falls to 6-4. St. Bonaventure's win on Saturday snaps what had been a three-game winning streak for a hot St. Francis squad.
St. Bonaventure will be on the road Wednesday, Oct. 4 when it travels to Rhode Island to open up Atlantic 10 play.
