ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to Saint Joseph's, 2-0, in its Atlantic 10 debut Saturday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies outshot the Hawks, 13-9. The Brown and White pressured in the second half, firing seven shots to SJU's three.
The Hawks' first goal came late in the first half as Matt Crawford finished on a strike inside the box.
Into the second half, the Bonnies pressed while trailing 1-0. St. Bona's best chance came in the 74th minute. Jacob Dyck received a long pass on a clear from the Bona defense near the right sideline, and broke free behind the Saint Joseph's defensive line. He crossed it toward the middle, finding Paul Afful, who delivered a one-touch strike on net toward the left post. But, the Hawks' keeper Greg O'Connell made a diving save to deflect the shot wide.
Saint Joseph's doubled its lead with just two minutes remaining in regulation as Crawford fired a shot on net off a free kick from about 30 yards out.
Sophomore Luke Iacobellis made his first start in net since Sept. 11 against Robert Morris. Iacobellis saved one SJU chance in the game.
The Bonnies will be in action next on Wednesday as they welcome Duquesne to the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
